Lima is a sprawling Pacific-coast metropolis of over 10 million people that most visitors once treated as a layover on the way to Machu Picchu. That era is emphatically over. The city has been named the World's Leading Culinary Destination multiple times, its restaurants routinely appear on global best-of lists, and its colonial Historic Centre — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — showcases baroque churches and ornate balconied mansions that date to the Spanish viceroyalty. But Lima's history begins long before the Spanish: Huaca Pucllana, a towering adobe pyramid in the Miraflores dining district, was built by the Lima culture around 400 AD and still stands surrounded by restaurants and apartment blocks. The city stretches along cliff tops overlooking the Pacific, and the Miraflores Boardwalk traces these bluffs with paragliders overhead and surfers below. To the south, Barranco is Lima's bohemian soul — a neighborhood of art galleries, street murals, crumbling colonial villas, and some of the best bars in South America. An English-speaking guide in Lima is especially valuable because the city's layers — pre-Inca, colonial, republican, and modern — are not obvious without context.

Garúa season: From May to November, Lima is shrouded in a persistent grey mist called garúa — pack layers, as temperatures hover around 15°C despite being near the equator. Summer (Dec-Apr): The sun breaks through, temperatures reach 28°C, and Limeños flock to the beaches south of the city.
