About Accademia
The Galleria dell'Accademia exists for one primary reason: to house Michelangelo's David, the world's most famous sculpture. Carved from a single block of Carrara marble 1501-1504, this 17-foot masterpiece of Renaissance art represents the pinnacle of human form in sculpture. The gallery also contains Michelangelo's unfinished "Prisoners" emerging from marble.
