Overview
The Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Napoli (MANN) houses the finest collection of Roman artifacts on Earth. When Pompeii and Herculaneum were excavated, their most precious objects came here: mosaics, frescoes, sculptures, and everyday items that survived Vesuvius. The museum also inherited the Farnese collection of classical sculptures, including colossal pieces from Rome's Baths of Caracalla. Spanning three floors of a 16th-century palace, the collection can overwhelm without guidance. An expert helps you navigate to the highlights while explaining the context that makes these ancient objects meaningful. Combine with Pompeii for the ruins and Naples Underground for subterranean history.
Guided Tours
The museum's three floors of galleries require strategic navigation. A guide links artifacts to their original locations -- showing exactly where the Alexander Mosaic stood in the House of the Faun at Pompeii, for example. The Gabinetto Segreto (Secret Cabinet) houses the notorious erotic art collection from Pompeii, once hidden from public view for centuries -- guides explain the cultural context tactfully. Efficient routing ensures you see the masterpieces without exhausting yourself across the vast collection.
