Overview

The Calanques are a series of dramatic limestone inlets stretching 20 kilometers along the Mediterranean coast between Marseille and Cassis. Created in 2012, this national park protects some of Europe's most spectacular coastal scenery - towering white cliffs plunging into crystal-clear turquoise waters. The park spans 8,500 hectares of land and 43,500 hectares of sea, home to over 140 protected species. Best explored from Marseille or combined with a visit to Old Port for boat departures.

Wildlife

The park protects over 140 species across 8,500 hectares of land and 43,500 hectares of sea. Look for Bonelli's eagles, peregrine falcons soaring above the cliffs, and Eurasian eagle-owls nesting in limestone crevices. The marine reserve harbors groupers, barracuda, octopus, and occasional dolphins. Endemic plants include the Marseille tragacanth and several rare orchid species clinging to the white limestone. Posidonia seagrass meadows below the surface are vital Mediterranean nurseries.
