Overview

Tucked into the foothills of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta at 660 meters elevation, Minca is a small mountain village that offers a cool escape from the Caribbean heat below. Coffee farms dot the surrounding hillsides, growing some of Colombia's finest shade-grown beans in the world's highest coastal mountain range. The village has become a hub for birdwatchers — the Sierra Nevada contains over 600 bird species, with around 300 observable from Minca's trails and lodges. Waterfalls cascade through the forest, cacao farms offer bean-to-bar tours, and hammock-strung eco-lodges provide the soundtrack of cicadas and birdsong.

Trails

Coffee farm tours — Follow the bean from tree to cup at small family-run fincas. Birdwatching at dawn — Toucans, motmots, tanagers, and the endemic Santa Marta parakeet. Pozo Azul waterfall — Natural swimming pool in the forest, a 20-minute walk from the village. Cacao tours — Learn the bean-to-bar process and taste freshly made chocolate

Wildlife

Minca sits within one of the planet's most bird-dense ecosystems, where the endemic Santa Marta parakeet, Santa Marta toucanet, and Santa Marta sabrewing are found nowhere else on Earth. Dawn birding walks from eco-lodges like El Dorado regularly tally keel-billed toucans, blue-naped chlorophonias, and golden-ringed tanagers before breakfast. Beyond birds, the cloud forest trails harbor white-lipped peccaries, tayras, and glass frogs, while iridescent blue morpho butterflies congregate along the streams feeding Pozo Azul waterfall.
