Overview
Two hours east of Medellín, the small town of Guatapé and the massive Piedra del Peñol form one of Colombia's most photographed day trips. The Piedra — a 200-meter granite monolith rising from a landscape of green hills and a labyrinthine reservoir — has 740 concrete steps zigzagging up a crack in its face, leading to views that stretch to the horizon in every direction. Below, Guatapé town dazzles with its zócalos: hand-painted bas-relief panels on every building's lower walls depicting local life, animals, and traditions. The reservoir, created in the 1970s for hydroelectricity, now offers boat tours through drowned canyons and past vacation islands.
Trails
The climb — 740 steps up a crack in the granite face, with views expanding at every turn. Summit panorama — 360-degree views of emerald islands dotting the vast reservoir. Zócalos of Guatapé — Hundreds of colorful bas-relief panels decorating every building. Reservoir boat tour — Cruise past submerged hills and private islands
Wildlife
The reservoir's forested shoreline and islands host green iguanas basking on exposed rocks and white-tailed hawks soaring on thermals above the Piedra. Herons and kingfishers patrol the water's edge, and southern lapwings nest in the grassy fields around Guatapé town. The surrounding subtropical forest harbors howler monkeys, three-toed sloths, and several hummingbird species, including the rufous-tailed hummingbird often spotted feeding on flowering trees near the reservoir's shore.
