Overview
Dubai Mall, opened in 2008, is the world's largest shopping mall by total area at 12.1 million square feet, with over 1,200 retail stores, 200 food outlets, and major attractions including the Dubai Aquarium, an Olympic-size ice rink, VR Park, and a 22-screen cinema. Attracting more than 100 million visitors annually, it is as much an entertainment destination as a shopping centre.
Located in Downtown Dubai at the base of the Burj Khalifa, the mall connects to the tower via an underground walkway. The Fashion Avenue section rivals London's Bond Street for luxury brands, while the Souk section recreates a traditional Arabian market atmosphere. Outside, the Dubai Fountain performs choreographed shows every 30 minutes from 6 PM on the adjacent lake.
Events Schedule
The Dubai Aquarium houses a 10-million-litre tank with over 140 species visible through the mall walkway, including sand tiger sharks and giant groupers. The Dubai Fountain performs the world's largest choreographed water, music, and light show on a 275-metre lake every evening.
The Dubai Ice Rink offers Olympic-size skating sessions in air-conditioned comfort year-round. VR Park features virtual and augmented reality games across multiple zones. The Fashion Avenue wing houses luxury brands including Chanel, Dior, Hermes, and Louis Vuitton. A full Tyrannosaurus rex fossil skeleton is displayed in the Grand Atrium. The Dubai Mall website lists seasonal events and promotions.
Seating Guide
The mall spans 4 floors across 12 zones, making navigation challenging without a plan. Start from the main entrance nearest your interests: the Fashion Avenue entrance for luxury shopping, the Ground Floor entrance near the aquarium for family attractions, or the Waterfront entrance for dining with fountain views.
With over 200 restaurants, narrow down by cuisine and budget before arriving. The Souk section on the lower ground floor offers traditional Arabian goods, oud perfumes, and gold jewellery at better prices than standalone boutiques. For VAT refunds, keep all receipts and process the refund at the airport before departure. Allow a minimum of 3-4 hours for shopping plus attractions plus a Dubai Fountain show. The Burj Khalifa observation deck is a short walk through the underground connection.
When to Visit
Shopping hours run 10:00 AM to midnight daily, with Friday opening delayed to 12 PM for morning prayers. Many restaurants stay open until 1:00 AM or later. The best time for a less crowded experience is weekday mornings from 10 AM to 1 PM.
The Dubai Fountain shows begin at 6:00 PM and repeat every 30 minutes, best viewed from the waterfront promenade. Avoid weekend evenings, which are extremely crowded, especially during the annual Dubai Shopping Festival.
Admission and Costs
Mall entry is free. The Dubai Aquarium tunnel walk costs AED 150 (~$41), though the tank is partially visible from the mall walkway at no charge. Ice rink admission is AED 75-90 (~$20-25) including skate rental. VR Park access runs AED 125-200 (~$34-54) depending on which rides are selected.
Personal shopping guide services cost AED 500-800 (~$136-218) for 3-4 hours of curated shopping assistance. Food court meals range from AED 30-80 (~$8-22), while sit-down restaurants run AED 100-400+ per person.
Tips for Visitors
Download the mall app for navigation and store directories, though the layout remains confusing on a first visit. Wear comfortable shoes and expect 2-3 km or more of walking across multiple floors.
The mall opens at noon on Fridays rather than the usual 10 AM. The Metro provides direct access via the Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall station, avoiding parking hassles. Keep receipts for the UAE's VAT refund scheme, which can be processed at the airport before departure. Currency exchange booths inside the mall offer weaker rates than those in downtown areas. Plan a minimum of 3-4 hours for a meaningful visit combining shopping, one or two attractions, and a Dubai Fountain show in the evening.
