Overview

Neuschwanstein Castle, built 1869-1886 by "Mad King" Ludwig II of Bavaria, is Germany's most visited castle with 1.5 million annual visitors. Perched on a rugged hill above Hohenschwangau village near Fussen (120km from Munich), this Romanesque Revival palace inspired Walt Disney's Sleeping Beauty Castle. It is a popular day trip from Munich (around two hours each way), but it is not located in the city. Ludwig's romantic vision created theatrical interiors with swan motifs, Wagnerian opera themes, and lavish gold leaf decoration - though he only lived there 172 days before his mysterious death.

Notable Rooms

Throne Room: Byzantine-inspired hall with golden mosaic (throne never completed). Singers' Hall: Wagnerian opera-inspired banquet hall (never used for performance). Swan motifs: Everywhere - Ludwig's symbol from Wagner's Lohengrin. Grotto: Artificial stalactite cave with waterfall between rooms. Kitchen: Surprisingly modern with hot and cold running water for 1886. Bedroom: Ornate Gothic carved oak bed that took 14 craftsmen over 4 years to complete.

Fortification History

Unlike true medieval castles, Neuschwanstein was never built for defense. Constructed 1869-1886 as a personal retreat, it used modern steel framing and central heating behind its Romanesque Revival facades. Ludwig II bankrupted Bavaria's treasury funding this and his other castles. After his mysterious death in 1886, the castle opened to paying visitors just weeks later to recoup debts. Today 1.5 million visitors annually make it Germany's most visited castle. Marienplatz in Munich is the typical departure point for day trips.
