Overview
Castle Hill (Colline du Château) is a 92-meter rocky outcrop jutting into the Mediterranean between the Old Town and the Port. Though the medieval castle was destroyed in 1706, the hill remains Nice's best viewpoint, offering stunning 360-degree panoramas over the Baie des Anges, Old Town's terracotta roofs, and the Alps behind. Shaded gardens, a waterfall, and ruins make this a peaceful escape above the city bustle. With a guide, the scattered stone foundations come alive as the Greek trading post of Nikaia, founded around 350 BC, and later the fortified citadel that Louis XIV ordered razed after his siege of Nice.

Tips for Visitors
Take the free elevator from Quai des États-Unis to save the steep climb and reserve energy for exploring the top. Bring water as there are limited vendors at the summit. The artificial waterfall on the north side is often missed by visitors who only go to the main viewpoint. Early morning or golden hour light gives the best photos of the Baie des Anges coastline. The hill connects to the old town (Vieux Nice) at the base so combine both in one outing for a full morning or afternoon.
